The aesthetic of this watch is sure to generate a lot of conversation within the watch community, and the Zenith community more specifically. But it’s a reminder of the chronometry at work inside, and a bit of a flex for Zenith, which is as much a part of the Defy’s long history as anything else. Is it useful to have a small seconds hand that makes a full rotation around its subdial every 10 seconds, instead of every 60? I mean, probably not. The new movement is officially dubbed the El Primero 3620, and takes the architecture of the 3600 and adapts it for a simple time and date execution, but with a neat trick always visible with that extra quick seconds hand.

The mechanism oscillates at 36,000 vph (5 Hz).Which means – you guessed it – that small seconds hand at 9:00 whips around its tiny register at the same rate as the chronograph seconds hand on the Chronomaster Sport. It includes a straight-line lever escapement, a monometallic balance, a self-compensating flat balance spring, and an engraved rotor. It's constructed with 39 jewels, 248 components, and a shock absorber device.

It is rhodium-plated, with Côtes de Genève and oeil-de-perdrix embellishment. This Zenith El Primero Chronomaster T Open, reference 03.0240.4021/02.C495, runs on a mechanical automatic self-winding Zenith El Primero caliber 4021 column-wheel chronograph movement. It's water resistant to 30 meters/100 feet, and the 13.5mm thick case, dial, and movement are all signed. A "reserve de march" 50-hour power reserve indicator arch is at the 6 o'clock position, and a 30-minute totalizer sub dial inside a brushed ring is at 3 o'clock.

There are steel dauphine hands, with a balanced center sweep chronograph hand. It has a silver guilloche dial with applied steel dart hour markers on a brushed steel reserve with a minute/second track. The gold guilloche rotor is engraved "El Primero," with the Zenith star, and "Swiss made manufacture Le Locle." The 40mm diameter solid two-body case, fluted downturned lugs, and stepped bezel are polished. It has a screw-down exhibition sapphire display case back secured with 8 screws, engraved with "Zenith – ChronoMaster – water resistant 30M – Stainless Steel," and the reference number. There are rectangular chronograph pushbuttons, and a heart-shaped open face area is between 8 and 12 o'clock that shows the escapement. It has an alligator leather strap with a stainless steel deployant buckle, and a scratch resistant sapphire crystal. This is a stainless steel Zenith El Primero Chronomaster T Open, reference 03.0240.4021/02.C495. More about El Primero SS Chronomaster T Open
